Sustainable Harvest

OVERFISHINGfromPEW

Over fishing our oceans can have dire consequences to marine ecosystems. As of 2003, marine scientists estimate that commercial fishing has reduced the populations of large fish species by 90%. Some studies suggest that if current trends continue, all of the worlds fisheries will collapse by the year 2048. Sustainable harvesting is a movement that has developed over the last few decades in an effort to combat and reverse the effects years of over-fishing has had on our oceans. The Portland Aquarium has partnered with The Monterey Bay Seafood Watch program to spread awareness of the state of our oceans and how to make informed decisions when purchasing seafood.
